We drove along a path that was winding back and forth, at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, all the while watching for some sort of wildlife to show itself. It was late fall and the snow had yet to fall, though the earth seemed to be crawling back into itself, to start a long torpor session. As such, nothing large came lumbering out of the dying grasses or slowly sneaked around the shorelines of the ponds and lakes. Instead, the sun started to hide behind the faraway hills and created hard shadows ahead of us, disappearing into turns.
I utilized the shaows to attempt to add a deeper emotion, as the shadows are part of what I caught my attention, made me turn off te car and lean out the door to take a pur of the moment shot. I love the ook f the deep contrast and heavy shadows in the monochrome of the first shot.
These are some of my favorite shots, from that day, as the paths wind out of view and it feels as if you are on a journey, not knowing where to. These paths tell a story that we often ignore, speaking to the unknown and paths we have yet to follow. In this, when the shadows hit like this and the turns vanish, it often feels like “The Road Not Taken” and you can almost hear the whisper of Frost “I took the one less traveled by/And that has made all the difference.”
